Journey through Morocco from Tangier Grand Tour 11 Days / 10 Nights

A long journey to meet the full Morocco

Departure from  Tangier  Duration  11 days

Day 1: Tangier - Tetouan - Chefchaouen

Arrival at Tangier and pick-up at the airport in the same city. We leave the northern point of Morocco and travel south to Chefchaouen making a stop in the striking green and white city of Tetouan; also called the Spanish city. In the afternoon we arrive in Chefchaouen, which we will discover with a guided city tour. We will walk through narrow streets of the medina and among its old homes painted in pale blues and white, and contemplate its beautiful panoramic views. Dinner and overnight will be at a hotel in Chefchaouen square.

Day 2: Chefchaouen - Fes

We depart in the morning and continue traveling south; our journey takes us through lush countryside as we cross the mountain villages of Jbala in the Rif Mountains. We will arrive in Fes after about 4 hours. One of the four imperial cities (together with Marrakech, Meknes and Rabat): Fes is considered the religious and cultural centre of the country. Bed and breakfast at a riad or in a hotel.

Day 3: Fes

Today is dedicated to the discovery of the intellectual centre of the kingdom. Given the many monuments that you can visit, we recommend hiring an official guide who can show you the most interesting places such as: Medersas (Koranic schools): Sahrij, Bouinania, Attarine, The Souks, Fes el-Jdid and the famous Quaraouiyine Mosque (the oldest university in the world). Also, it is very interesting to visit the neighbourhood of leather tanners, where we can appreciate this artisanal work. Overnight at a hotel or in a Riad.

Day 4: Fes - Middle Atlas - Merzouga

From Fes we will cross the Middle Atlas Mountains, visiting Ifrane, known as the Switzerland of Africa. The next stop will be the ancient cedar forests, inhabited by Barbary monkeys that we will hopefully see. We will reach Midelt, where most of the population in the great Atlas live. We will follow our way through the Tizi n´ Talghemt pass which is 1,907 metres high. The landscape is absolutely breath-taking; the mountains are completely bereft of vegetation. This is a typical high mountain landscape. We will go through Errachidia, Tafilalet, across the massif and down to the Ziz valley with its stunning views of the palm grove and oasis. We will reach Erfoud "the door to the desert" and we will continue into the wilderness. Once we reach our destination in Merzouga your camels will be waiting to take you to your tented accommodation in the highest dunes in North Africa, the Erg Chebbi. We will sleep in typical Berber Haimas and enjoy the local hospitality and culture on the dunes.

Day 5: Merzouga - Rissani - Todra Gorge - Boumalne Dades

We will leave Merzouga in the morning after breakfast. We will stop in Rissani, the old Sijilmassa and the current economic capital of the nomads who come to the weekly market for their general supplies. We will visit the brightly coloured souks full of exciting sights and smells. After the visit, we will continue towards the spectacular Todra Gorge: a narrow canyon with vertical walls popular with international rock climbers. Overnight at a hotel in Boumalne Dades.

Day 6: Dades - Skoura - Ouarzazate - Ait Benhaddou

After breakfast, we will continue our tour of Morocco and make a tour along the Dades River where there are numerous Kasbahs. We will cross the Atlas to visit a nomadic family and see their way of life living in a cave. Then we will continue to the Valley of Roses passing through Boutaghrar and Skoura where we will have some time to visit its famous Kasbah: Amridil. In Ouarzazate we will visit the Kasbah Taourirt and 25 km from it, we will visit the jewel of the region, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the Kasbah of Aït Benhaddou where many movies such as Lawrence of Arabia and The Gladiator have been filmed. We will spend the night in a hotel in Ait Benhaddou.

Day 7: Ait Benhaddou - High Atlas Mountains - Essaouira

After breakfast, we will cross the High Atlas Mountains via the high pass at Tizi n´Tichka before descending to the plains near Marrakech, this will take us closer to the Atlantic coast where Essaouira is, the Pearl of the Atlantic. Upon our arrival in the afternoon, we will stop at the Riad where we will enjoy the sunset from the ramparts, an experience you shouldn´t miss. At night in one of its many restaurants, you can taste the excellent seafood and shellfish that comes in fresh daily from its shores and take an evening stroll in this quaint and picturesque town.

Day 8: Essaouira

Today you have the day free to explore and enjoy this ancient town originally called "Mogador" by the Portuguese, one of the most beautiful cities of the Atlantic coast of Morocco. With its charming blue and white medina, long beaches and ancient walls from the time the Portuguese colonised it has much to discover. Stroll the narrow streets and watch the artisans at work, visit the galleries and view local artwork. Take a walk along the ramparts, visit the fishing port, go surfing, horse riding or take a camel ride, or just relax on the sandy beach and taste the local fish at the beach side restaurants. Night in a Riad.

Day 9: Essaouira - Marrakech

In the afternoon we will continue our tour and take the road for Marrakech making some stops on our way. This region has many Argan trees, the nuts are collected and processed into the health giving argan oil, on the way you will see many of these trees and we will stop for you to see a local phenomenon. When we arrive in Marrakech you will be transferred to your riad.

Day 10: Tour of Marrakech

In the morning the official guide will pick you up at your riad to start your visit of the most interesting places of the city of Marrakech such as the Museum of Marrakech, the Medersa, the Majorelle gardens or the Saadian Tombs. You'll have the afternoon free to explore more of the city and souks, and in the evening the famous Jemaa el Fna, which reaches its peak at night. Night in a Riad.
