Summer Trip to Morocco

Tangier is the starting point for exploring the north of Morocco and the desert

Departure from  Tangier  Duration  10 days

Day 1: Tangier - Tetouan - Chefchaouen

Arrival at Tangier and pick-up at the airport or ferry port. We leave the northern point of Morocco and travel south to Chefchaouen making a stop in the striking green and white city of Tetouan; also called the Spanish city. In the afternoon we arrive in Chefchaouen, which we will discover with a guided city tour. We will walk through narrow streets of the medina and among its old houses painted in pale blues and white, and contemplate its beautiful panoramic views. Dinner and overnight will be at a hotel in Chefchaouen square.

Day 2: Chefchaouen - Volubilis - Meknes - Fes

Today we will drive to Fes, stopping on our way to visit the extensive ruins of the Roman city of Volubilis and to enjoy Meknes, a city that reached its peak thanks to Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 16th century. We will sleep in Fes, in a charming riad.

Day 3: Fes

Today is dedicated to the discovery of the intellectual centre of the kingdom. Given the many monuments that you can visit, we recommend hiring an official guide who can show you the most interesting places such as: Medersas (Koranic schools): Sahrij, Bouinania, Attarine, The Souks, Fes el-Jdid and the famous Quaraouiyine Mosque (the oldest university in the world). Also, it is very interesting to visit the neighbourhood of leather tanners, where we can appreciate this artisanal work. Overnight at a hotel or in a Riad.

Day 4: Fes - Ifrane - Azrou - Erfoud - Desert

From Fes we will travel south to the Middle Atlas, there we visit Ifrane, known as the little Switzerland of Africa. The following village we will visit will be Azrou; the rock: a Berber village known for its handicrafts, carpets and wood sculpture. We will continue on our way through the Tizi n´Talghemt pass at 1907 meters altitude. The landscape there is breath-taking: the mountains are completely bare, covered with a purple coat. Continuing south we pass through the towns of Errachidia, Erfoud and Rissani to reach our destination in the Sahara Desert where we will spend the night in a Berber camp.

Day 5: Erg Chebbi - Rissani - Todra Gorge - Valley of Roses - Skoura - Ouarzazate

Leaving the desert dunes in the morning, we depart towards the palm groves of Rissani and Jorf located on the right of the Ziz River, and from there to the Ksar of Touroug, surrounded by a spectacular oasis. We will also stop in Tinejdad, Tinerhir for some lunch and we will have the chance to walk through the Todra Gorges. We will drive along the beautiful valley visiting the Valley of Roses where the Damascus roses are in full bloom during the month of May. When we arrive in Ouarzazate, there will be time to visit the Kasbah of Taourirt which was the residence of the Pasha of Marrakech. Overnight will be in Ouarzazate with dinner and breakfast.

Day 6: Ouarzazate - Ait Benhaddou - Telouet - Marrakech

Leaving Ouarzazate in the morning, we will visit UNESCO heritage site of Ait Benhaddou: one of the most impressive Kasbahs and well-preserved fortresses in all of Morocco. Many movies were filmed here such as The Gladiator, The Mummy, Prince of Persia and dozens more. Leaving Ait Benhaddou behind, we continue along the Ounila Valley to Telouet. Once a palace residence of the governor of Marrakech, the outer ruins hide some incredible craftsmanship on the inside. After the visit we rejoin the route and we cross the High Atlas Mountains via the highest road pass in Morocco: Tizi n´Tichka, which is 2260m above sea level and offers impressive views of valleys, mountains and many Berber villages nearby. We arrive in Marrakech in the evening.

Day 7: Marrakech

In the morning you will visit the city that gave its name to Morocco. It extends to the majestic Atlas Mountains which are snow-capped early in the year. Its heritage is linked to the various dynasties that lived there and its political, economic and cultural traditions and its history. Marrakech is also the show city, where a permanent party is seen in the famous Jemaa el Fna square, which for several centuries has been the most incredible popular theatre in the world: snake charmers, musicians, dancers, storytellers, fortune tellers, actors and food stall holders gather together to create this amazing experience. In Marrakech there are countless places to visit; the Medersa of Ben Youssef, the Menara gardens, the Dar Si Said Museum, the Agdal garden, the Saadian Tombs and Palaces Badi and Bahia to name some. You will have the afternoon free to explore and shop in the souks and have dinner at the famous square. Night in a Riad.

Day 8: Marrakech - Essaouira

After breakfast in the morning we leave this vibrant busy city and take the road for the coast. We will be visiting the charming blue and white medina of Essaouira, on the way we will be stopping at an Argan oil co-operative for you to see the women extracting oil from the argan nuts and making cosmetics with this famous health giving elixir. You will be spending the night in a riad in the medina with breakfast.

Day 9: Essaouira

Today you have the day free to explore and enjoy this ancient town originally called "Mogador" by the Portuguese, one of the most beautiful cities of the Atlantic coast of Morocco. With its charming blue and white medina, long beaches and ancient walls from the time the Portuguese colonised it has much to discover. Stroll the narrow streets and watch the artisans at work, visit the galleries and view local artwork. Take a walk along the ramparts, visit the fishing port, go surfing, horse riding or take a camel ride, or just relax on the sandy beach and taste the local fish at the beach side restaurants. Night in a Riad.

Day 10: Marrakech - Airport

After breakfast we will leave the coast and return to Marrakech in time for your flight departures.
